These treasure boxes are well carved and much treasured, being handed down from generation to generation. They are surrounded by a halo of Tapu, or sacred power, which is derived from the mana, or prestige, of former owners. The tapu of a wakahuia is especially great because it will have held objects associated with the head such as pendants, combs and huia feathers. Wakahuia often had knob-like handles on each end with which they were suspended from the roof for safe keeping.
Approx: 65cm x 19cm x 14cm.

We have successfully combined Whakairo (the Art of Maori Carving) with fine European craftsmanship to represent New Zealand’s unique cultural heritage in our high quality work, using locally trained carvers with traditional techniques alongside other expert woodworkers with different technical skills. Our concern for the environment and a sense of Kaitiakitanga (stewardship) guides us in the careful selection of renewable timbers and careful handling of waste products.
